Our Members

Each year, AYD works with an average of 40 to 50 middle-school and high-school boys. We consider them members, a term that underscores our long-term commitment to their success. Nearly 85% of them remain with AYD for five or more years, through high school graduation.

Most new AYD members are referred by their schools during sixth or seventh grade because they've been identified as "high risk" for falling behind and eventually dropping out. Their academic vulnerability is compounded by a number of other factors placing them at risk for juvenile delinquency -- single-parent homes, low-income households, residence in high-crime neighborhoods, siblings or relatives with a history of delinquency.

Our Neighborhoods

While almost every North Side neighborhood is represented on AYD's membership roster, we are particularly focused on serving boys and young men in the neighborhoods of Marshall-Shadeland and Brighton Heights. Our program center and offices are located on California Avenue in Marshall-Shadeland. Except for AYD and two of our frequent program partners, New Hope for Neighborhood Renewal and Providence Family Support Center, there are remarkably few organizations serving teenagers in these neighborhoods, even though the need is great.

  • Among 90 Pittsburgh neighborhoods, Marshall-Shadeland ranks seventh and Brighton Heights ranks 14th in the number of school-aged children.
  • Twenty-eight percent of the school-age children living on Pittsburgh's North Side reside in these two neighborhoods.
  • Ranked by the number of "idle youth" (ages 16 to 19, not in school and not employed), Brighton Heights comes in third and Marshall-Shadeland, sixth. That represents about 15 percent of the 16-to-19 age group in these neighborhoods.
  • Marshall-Shadeland and Brighton Heights rank sixth and seventh, respectively, in the total number of youth age 16 to 19 who have dropped out of school.
  • In fact, 38 percent of adults in Marshall-Shadeland did not graduate from high school; the figure is 18 percent in Brighton Heights.
