ORLANDO, FL- (August 2) - Rick Brown phoned from Fort Lauderdale to report that Donnie Ray Black went down 0-2 in today’s competition at the Junior U.S. Open Judo Championship.
“Of course he’s disappointed,” Coach Rick reports. “This was pretty much his last shot at a national junior title – he’ll be 20 next year. On the other hand, he has an exciting senior career ahead of him. You’ll be hearing a lot more about him this year.”
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL- (August 1) - Judo Coach Rick Brown called from Fort Lauderdale this evening – Devante Tiller just won a silver medal at the Junior U.S. Open Judo Championship in the Male Juvenile B 73kg division!
“He worked hard at the judo camp this past week, and this is the payoff,” says Coach Rick. “He was both aggressive and technically sound today.” Devante, 15, has amassed an impressive win-loss record this year, but this is his first win in a USA Judo Junior Point Tournament
PITTSBURGH, PA - (July 25) - Coach Rick Brown phoned from Orlando this evening to report that Donnie Ray Black went 5-2 to finish fourth among 15 athletes in his division at the USA Judo National Junior Olympic Championships at Walt Disney World Resort. “He went up against some of the best players in the country, and did extremely well,” says Coach Rick. “I’m very proud.”
Coach Rick also reported that AYD’s other athlete in the competition, Devante Tiller, fought one of the best matches of his young career but still came up short on Friday, 0-2. “Keep in mind, he’s just 15, and he’s already competing at this level.” Coach Rick says. “We’re going to see some great things coming from this kid.”
Donnie Ray and Devante will next travel with Coach Rick to Fort Lauderdale for the Junior U.S. Open Judo Camp July 28 – 30, and then compete in the Junior U.S. Open Tournament Aug. 1 and 2.
