Our Four-Step Model

AYD's four-step program model improves a student's academic performance and guides his development as a young man:

  1. AYD catches a student on his downward academic slide and helps him find solid footing through tutoring and homework help, reversing failing grades, usually within one school year.
  2. We guide our members to on-time high school graduation by providing continuing academic assistance sessions and offering an array of programs that develop social skills and spiritual growth.
  3. Collaborating with other teen development agencies, we help members embark on a career-oriented path after graduation, whether through continuing education, military service or job training.
  4. We prepare every AYD alumnus to ultimately give back everything he's gained - by raising a healthy family, serving as a volunteer, pursuing careers in education and youth programming, or financial giving.

Program Options

Academic assistance classes form the core requirements of the AYD program. Each member must enroll in homework help or tutoring classes based Pennsylvania Department of Education standards. Trained volunteers conduct homework help in one-on-one meetings or in very small groups. Instructors in our standards-based tutoring classes are professional educators, most of them public school teachers. The AYD staff monitors each member's progress weekly and provides detailed follow-up with his family and teachers, adjusting each student's assistance plan as needed.

Elective courses teach and reinforce traditional values such as honesty, sportsmanship, courtesy and courage through popular recreation activities. Professionals and experts, many from collaborating organizations, teach the electives. For example, a PGA pro and experienced volunteers lead golf lessons at The First Tee of Pittsburgh; black-belt instructors from South Hills Judo Club teach judo.

Christian education courses are an option for members seeking a more serious understanding of the Bible and Christ's message of redemption and salvation. Our staff of lay volunteers works with Urban Impact Foundation, The Pittsburgh Project, Allegheny Center Alliance Church and Pittsburgh Leadership Foundation to help our members grow into godly men.
