Current Programs and Activities

AYD builds strong relationships between our staff and members, typically lasting six or seven years, and averaging 10 to 20 hours each week. This group mentoring approach delivers results in four core areas:

  • Academic assistance rescues failing grades through homework help and student advocacy, and improves student proficiency through standards-based tutoring. Services are delivered after school at our Shadeland Ave. center and at Pittsburgh Rooney middle school.
  • Self-control development decreases student behavior referrals and improves classroom performance by using the acclaimed Martin Henley curriculum. Twenty distinct, measurable self-control traits are taught in both a role-playing classroom setting and in real-life situations throughout the entire after-school and evening program.
  • Practical self-control applications, directly correlating to the 20 Henley traits, are deliberately woven into the daily lesson plans of free-elective courses such as judo, golf and basketball.
  • Christian education courses are offered optionally at AYD’s New Hope Church site on Shadeland Ave. for members seeking a more serious understanding of the Bible and Christ’s message of hope and redemption.
