Self-Control Project launches

The Self-Control Project at AYD launched its pilot phase in September, in collaboration with the "Degrees to Diplomas" program at South Hills Judo Club. Twice a week, 14 participants practiced judo, interspersed with lessons from "Teaching Self-Control," a nationally acclaimed curriculum. They also receive an hour of academic tutoring and enjoy a hot supper. (View larger photo)

In January, The Self Control Project will expand to enroll up to 20 new middle school boys and integrate the curriculum into all of AYD''s tutoring, recreation and Christian education classes. More than 30 highly at-risk adolescent boys are expected to participate this spring; over the next three years, the project plans to enroll more than 120 members.

The Self Control Project at AYD is supported by a grant from the Eden Hall Foundation; legislative initiative funding sponsored by Pa. State Senator Wayne D. Fontana; a grant from the Lloyd Foundation through the PNC Charitable Trust Grant Review Committee; and by general operating support to AYD from the DSF Charitable Foundation.
