Volunteer Opportunities
AYD is seeking volunteers in three general areas:
- Academic Mentors tutor one, two or three designated students for an entire public school grading period. We ask academic mentors to study with their students for 90-minute sessions at least twice a week. Students bring their own study materials, usually homework assigned by their teachers.
- Recreation Volunteers teach or assist in our free elective classes. Commitments usually range from nine to 18 weeks, with volunteers working two to four hours per week.
- Support Volunteers may serve in a wide range of capacities, including van drivers, office assistants and custodial workers. This category offers with widest range of commitments and hours, although we ask Support Volunteers to closely follow the schedule they set. Some of our most immediate support needs:
- Van maintenance manager You don’t need to be mechanically inclined, but we do need somebody to drive our vans to and from routine maintenance appointments, supervise one or two teens who vacuum and clean the vans, and generally keep track of van maintenance and mileage records. The time commitment would be for two two-hour weekday afternoons each month.
- Bookkeeper AYD is seeking an experienced part-time volunteer bookkeeper to pay bills, prepare deposits, and record and acknowledge donations using QuickBooks software. The time commitment would be for a two- or three-hour session once a week.
What is required?
Along with committing to a schedule, we will ask you to provide Acts 33 and 34 child abuse and criminal record clearances. (If you don’t already have these, we can help you apply.) Some jobs may have specific requirementsfor example, volunteer van drivers must agree to a driving record check by our insurance company.
